PADI Open Water Referral: frequently asked questions
What is a PADI Open Water Referral?
A referral lets you split your Open Water course in two. You complete your eLearning and pool training with Dive World, then do your certification dives on vacation or closer to home with another PADI Dive Center.

What is the minimum age?
The minimum age is 10.
Is there a swimming requirement?
Yes. You need to swim 200 metres nonstop at any speed, or snorkel 300 metres nonstop wearing a mask, snorkel and fins. You also need to float or tread water for 10 minutes in water too deep to stand in.
How long does the referral course take, and when are the pool sessions?
The PADI eLearning theory takes about 4 hours and is done online ahead of your pool dates. Private Fast Track pool training runs 2PM to 9PM on a Saturday or Sunday. Standard group pool training runs 2PM to 9PM on Saturday and 4PM to 9PM on Sunday.
Where does the pool training take place?
Pool training is at Swansea Pool. Dive World rents the entire facility just for its students, and it is a large heated indoor pool.
How long is my referral valid?
Once you complete your pool training, you receive a referral document that is valid for 365 days.
Where can I complete my certification dives?
Anywhere in the world. You take your referral document to a PADI Dive Center of your choice and complete your open water dives there.
Do I need my own gear?
Scuba rentals are included. Mask, snorkel, boots and fins are not included. Students provide their own scuba quality mask, snorkel, boots and fins for hygiene and comfort. Dive World has a large selection in stock and can help you find the right fit.
What if I need more time in the pool?
PADI courses are performance-based, not time-based. Students must demonstrate all required knowledge and performance requirements before they can be referred for open water training. If additional instruction is needed, it can be scheduled separately and is subject to the applicable training fee.
